Fluoride is inevitable for teeth. In order to keep your teeth healthy, white and strong, you need fluoride. It helps to speed up demineralization of teeth enamel. It works on the teeth in two different ways.
Fluoride, in the form of food, water or supplement, enters into the blood through stomach and gets absorbed by the body, and then it becomes available to teeth, in children. However, swallowed fluoride is not available to the teeth in people over the 16 years of age.
- While the children drink or eat fluoride, it enters into blood and participates in developing permanent teeth. Fluoride can be swallowed and this time fluoride becomes the part of saliva to give the teeth support from outside. Teeth enamel built up by fluoride are less likely to be damaged by acids.
- Fluoride can be directly applied to the teeth as the form of fluoride toothpaste or mouth rinse.
